During my time of employment as the Gender Centre's Social and Support Worker, I have received a number of complaints of verbal,
physical and sexual abuse. Currently I am setting up Police Liaison Officer contacts. These encompass the areas of Newtown, Marrickville,
Kings Cross, Surry Hills, Maroubra, Miranda, Sutherland, Parramatta, Penrith and Newcastle.
All these police liaison officers will be personally interviewed by myself. They will be educated on how to work closely with
transgendered people. The reason this is necessary is because transgendered people are constantly discriminated against by society often
because of the way they look.
There is a lack of education and understanding by the wider community of transgender people and as a result, they are too fearful to
report any type of abuse to police. Early next year, the Education and Resource Worker, Elizabeth Riley and myself will be educating the
Police Academy out at Goulburn and also the Correctional Services centres.
Within the next few weeks I will have Police Liaison flyers out there for transgendered people with friendly police liaison contacts.
